Area of study: Conflict and Peace Topic/question: How close are we to reaching world peace, and what is preventing us from reaching this goal? Centre number: SG563 Files: AO2 Individual Report
How close are we to reaching world peace, and what is preventing us from reaching this goal? Rationale World peace has always been talked about, but we have not been able to achieve. Humans are always at war for different reasons. The reason why I have chosen this topic is due to the recent events of the Islamic Sates with their attacks on Charlie Hebdo shooting in early January 2015, and the November Paris attack. We are all the same but we choose to differentiate ourselves for different reasons, hence decided to find out what are the causes that trigger this difference .In addition, I will be seeing if we are close to reaching world peace. Introduction (What is World Peace?) World peace is the state where nations and its people live harmoniously with other in a voluntarily manner and or via an agreed governing system/rules without violence / warfare. “Can world peace be achieved?” In my view, everyone wants it but is hard to attain and sustain it, as there are multiple issues that hinder World Peace, like; Political Ideologies, Culture, Religious belief Territorial Disputes and Globalizations and Free Trades.
Primary Research Response Table 1 In my survey, I asked if peace is achievable. 80% of the respondents said “Yes, but it will not be anytime soon”. One respondent also said “The United Nations should not bow down to super powers like the US and other countries that manufacture weapons and export. Instead, they should revamp the election process at the UN so that countries that are neutral and focus on peacekeeping activities (no vested interest) lead the organisation.” Events that Trigger disorder Primary Research Response Table 2 Based on my survey results, it was found that majority of the respondents believed “Differing Religious Beliefs” and “Territorial Disputes” are the major factors which lead to conflicts that destabilize World Peace. Below are detailed explanations on the factors that destabilize World Peace. Religious beliefs Religious belief is about following a religion. There are different types of religions in this world and there are different types of views, opinions, and perspectives in this world. Some believe that their religion is more superior to others, which can lead to disputes,
arguments and at times war too. According to the Huffington Post, in all the recorded wars of history (1,763 recorded wars) about less than 7 percent of wars are caused by religious beliefs. This may not be a very big percentage, but that is almost 123 wars. Imagine, the amount of casualties that could have been prevented if people did not find religion to become a trigger for war.
