Rationale This written task is connected to my study of Part 2: Mass media and communication. As part of our study, we evaluated how mass media is used as a platform to perform atrocious acts which result in depression and suicide. Twitter, Instagram serves as a medium for bullies to upload misleading photos and hurtful comments to harass the target. In many places such as novels and television series, this topic has been illustrated and highlighted.
My written task focuses on the prevalent topic of cyberbullying which has resulted in much harm for the people using social media. As part of this, I came across a case study of a high school senior Brandy Vela who committed suicide after her cyber harassment got out of control. The task illustrates the cyberbullying problem and means of avoiding and stopping the issue. My written task is a speech given by Jacqueline Vela, the older sister of the late Brandy Vela. My target audience is meant to be the students and parents of a certain high school since cyberbullying generally takes place in high school. This speech is essential for the teenagers and parents of the school since the statistics show that cyberbullying is not going to stop anytime soon. The perspective of the sister is taken in use to convey the emotional aspect of the speech. [223 words] Speech The mass media plays a significant role in bullying and suicide in public discourse. In fact, the introduction of the Internet and social media has caused positive and negative media influences to impregnate multiple layers of the socio-ecological system of an individual. Bullies and mean girls have always been around, but technology now offers them an entirely new platform to do their acts. Across developed and developing countries, almost every
single person owns a cell phone or a laptop. The use of social media such as Facebook, Instagram etc. is growing exponentially. Which ensures they're vulnerable to attacks by cyberbullying.
