1. Rationale Living in a multi-racial country like Singapore, I always thought; “What is Singapore’s culture? What traditions does it follow?”, “Where lies the origin of its values and priorities?” These questions always probed my mind, until I read an article in the ‘Singapore Magazine’ - ‘Singapore Identity… Musings upon a Theme’. It defines the ‘identity’ as a feeling which “crystallises a sense of belonging to what we call home.” 1 According to the writer, Mr. Kirpal Singh, “home is where our heart is”. This raises a question “Where does a Singaporean’s heart reside?” Singapore receives people all year long, in the form of tourists, businessmen and migrants. Influenced by these travellers, Singapore follows Chinese, Indian, Malay and the Western traditions. But what about its own culture? Thus I felt the need to research this topic and find out how migration and tourism affects the identity of a nation. 1 Singapore’s Identity: Musing upon a Theme-< - upon-a-theme >
2. Introduction According to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights Article 13, “Every citizen has the liberty to travel, reside in, or work in any part of the state where one pleases” 2 But does this freedom take into account the effect it has on the host country? Figure 1: Migration in USA between 1960 and 2013 According to Migration Policy Institute, in 2000, the United States of America had a migrant share of 12.2% of the total population. Within 13 years this rose to 14.3%. 3 2.1 Personal Response Analysis of above graph indicates that that the number of migrants rose by 31.5% in 2000-2013. As a result of just the illegal immigrant population, 15 million Americans, particularly of the lower class, were unemployed. 4 2 Article 13:Declaration Of Human Rights-< > 3 Migration Policy Institute stats on USA-< - migrants-country-destination-1960-2013?width=1000&height=850&iframe=true > 4 Impact of illegal immigration on USA-, - shows-illegal-immigrations-impact-on-young-americans >
