Research Summary: Our 16th President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated at Ford’s Theatre in Washington, D.C a little after 10pm by a well known actor John wilkes Booth. Booth snuck into the box where Lincoln and his wife, Mary Todd Lincoln, along with a young soldier, Henry Rathbone and Rathbone’s fiancé, Clara Harris, and the daughter of New York Senator Ira Harris. Booth shot Abraham in the back of his head and stabbed Rathbone, who tried to come at him, in his shoulder. Booth then jumped down onto to the stage and screamed “Sic semper tyrannis!” then escaped out the back. When Booth jumped onto the stage he broke his leg. Charles Leale, a doctor who was in the audience at the time, rushed up to the private box to where Lincoln was paralyzed and struggled to breathe. Charles then told Mary, Lincoln was not going to make it through the night.
