VES 184: Lecture Notes (Oct 15, 2009) Statues: monuments to the body, just as they're monuments to the city Relationship between body and city has been prevalent over time o The city as a monument to the body? Some can argue that the body is the constituent that makes the city o "The body is like a palace" > metaphor of a body like a building THE BELLY OF AN ARCHITECT What's inside, is a bit decayed (Boullee?) We experience a successive move in the film What happens with the loss of the body? No longer conceived as this perfect palace Anatomy and how we view the body is a function of the culture in which we grew up in/live in Body is a form of circulation, of free flowing nerves and ENERGY o Became not just the image of the body and the image of the city, instead an actual living, thriving body Not just the SURFACE, but what happens WITHIN They believed that in order to have a healthy city, they need to have a workable body: circulation of air, of people

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
