Is title 9 fair? Yes. 1. Coakley (2009) According to the US Surgeon General (1999 a&b) and the World Health Organization (2007), there has been a significant amount of research confirming the health benefits of physical activity. People (the population) are becoming more aware of this phenomenon and Title 9 allows women to promote their health/well-being in the same capacity as men. 2. Knoester (2012) In Class Lecture/Discussion The concept of character was heavily discussed as being in some way built within a person by taking part in sports as well as increased opportunity for success throughout life (this concept was also presented by Coakley). Women are now afforded that same opportunity for character building and success due to equalities in sports created by the legislation. 3. Messner, Dunbar, and Hunt (2000) “The Televised Sports Manhood Formula” The authors analyzed 6 different types of televised sporting events (mainstream) to the see the many elements that correlated to sport sociology as well as gender dynamics derived from these media outlets. The authors found that women are now announcers on the fields/courts for sports media including mainstream ESPN as well as female sports being broadcast about 2-6% of the time as opposed to being nonexistent prior to implementation of Title 9. 4. Playing Unfair (film) This was a documentary type movie regarding the issues involved with female sports and how the media portrays them. The Title 9 legislation has allowed for the emergence of professional female athletes and the movie showed that the media has shown them in magazines such as Sports Illustrated and acknowledging stellar athletes such as Billy Jean King in the male vs. female tennis match. 5. Knoester (2012) In Class Lecture/Discussion The lecture slides provide a definition of what the Title 9 legislation actually states in determining the fairness of the act. It states,”...no person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any educational program or activity receiving federal financial assistance.” 6. Knoester (2012) In Class Lecture/Discussion The lecture slides also explain that women now receive 43% of all scholarship dollars so this figure is a close representative of half of the amount of money used for scholarships. Title 9 has created a fairness in which a) scholarships are available to women and b) they are getting the almost equal amount of the money in comparison to males. 7. Messner and Bozada-Deas (2009) “Gender and Society: Separating the Men from the Moms- The Making of Adult Gender Segregation in Youth Sports” Over a period of multiple years, there is the use of participant observation as well as interviews of the gender dynamics that ensue within the adults (including

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
