Working towards an individual oral practice What is the summary/description of the “whole” literary body of work you’ve chosen? Write 1- 2 bullet points. In summary, the play "death of a salesman" by Arthur Miller follow the character Willy Loman through the last 24 hours before his death. It illustrates the naive idealism of the American Dream and a society pressuring its inhabitants to achieve financial success. What is the summary/description of this particular extract you’ve chosen and why? Write 1-2 bullet points. In this extract Willy loses his job and is offered a lower paid position which goes against his idea of success. It highlights Willy's inability to accept his social status, as he is faced with the reality of growing too old to be able to progress in his career and reach his dreams. How does this connect to the non-literary work and why? How does it connect to the global issue and why? Lack of social mobility is exactly what Willy Loman isn't capable of coming to terms with in the extract I've chosen. He denies that he will never be as financially succesful as he believes he should be, which is exactly what lead him to committing suicide. Because of the lack of social mobility, the idea of the American Dream becomes pointless and unreachable. What is your thesis or main claim? Alternatively, what is a question you could pose that would frame your exploration?
Miller uses the character of Willy Loman and his career struggles to demonstrate what a person might go through when facing social immobility.
