Forms of Comedy1Comedy can be described as professional entertainment consisting of jokes and sketches and it isintended to make an audience laugh. It has different form which includes satire, comedy of character, farce and parody. The first form is the satire which can be defined as the use of humor, ridicule, irony and exaggeration to criticize and expose people’s vices. It is often used in most plays so as to draw attention to both particular and wider issues in the society. There are two types of satire: Juvenalian and Horatian satire. The Juvenalian satire addresses social evil through scorn, outrage and savage ridicule and is characterized by irony, sarcasm and moral indignation thus has less emphasis on humor (Osanyemi et. al., 2018). The Horatian satire is sympathetic, playful and criticizes social vice through gentle and light-hearted humor. It is characterized by exaggeration and self-deprecating humor.
