[15 pts] A. You visit the Bronx Zoo on a sultry summer day wearing shorts and a tank top. During the visit, you step inside the “Antarctica” building to see the penguins and seals. The room is freezing, and your body temperature begins to drop. What physiological response(s) will your body use to minimize heat loss ? Use vasoconstriction to reduce blood flow to the skin. Stop sweating. NOTE: thermogenesis (e.g. shivering) is not a relevant answer here. The generation of heat is not the same thing as adaptations that minimize the loss of body heat to the environment. B. In cold climates there are some mammal species that hibernate over the winter. While hibernating, they maintain a constant body temperature that is only a few degrees above freezing. Given that a mammal’s body temperature is regulated by negative feedback, how is it possible to adopt a different body temperature for several months of the year? The hibernating mammal has altered its body temperature 'setpoint'. It will continue to use negative feedback to maintain a constant temperature, but while hibernating that temperature will be only a few degrees above freezing.
