2 RESEARCH DESIGN & SAMPLING Research Design and Sampling of an Empirical Research Article: Introduction In quantitative research, the emphasis is on measuring social phenomenon because it is assumed that everything can be observed, measured, and quantified. However, in qualitative research, it is assumed that social phenomenon cannot be easily reduced and broken down into concepts that can be measured and quantified. Instead, there may be different meanings to phenomenon and experiences. In qualitative research, researchers use interviews, focus groups and observations to gather data and then report their findings using words and quotations. Skopp, Holland, Logan, Alexander and Floyd (2019) conducted a qualitative analysis of narrative data. The sampling method was used to identify limitations within the study and future research recommendations. Type of Study The study identified is qualitative because a key characteristic is the “collection of relatively unstructured data to describe the phenomena of interest in the words or actions of those who live them” (Yegidis, Weinbach, & Myers, 2018, pg. 126). Qualitative approaches to studies may be due to exploration of a topic in which little is known, the study encompasses a sensitive or emotional topic, and the ability to capture experiences from the perspectives of those who live it (Yegidis, Weinbach, & Myers, 2018). In this specific empirical research article, the topic is well known, and extensive quantitative studies have been conducted. However, very few qualitative approaches have been used and they have the potential to provide a more in-depth
