Biochemistry The branch of science in which you study the chemical and physical process that occur in an organism. Cells Basic structural units of living organism It is highly organized and constant source of energy is acquired to maintain the order state. Glycolosis Found in almost all organism All organisms use the same type of molecules: o CHO o Proteins o Lipids o Nucleic Acids Organic Compounds Contains carbon Contain other elements Found in organisms Examples: o DNA + Table Sugar o Methane + Ethanol Inorganic Compounds Do not usually contain carbon X Examples: o Table Salt + Carbon Dioxide o Diamond + Silver Similarites: - Chemical Compounds - Made of combination of elements Matter It classify as elements, compounds and mixtures Anything that occupies space and mass All matter, whether living or nonliving, is made of the same type buildings blocks called ATOMS . Anything that has mass we can measure Four general properties of matter: mass, volume, density and weight Anything that can be touch or felt
Atoms Smallest basic unit of matter All atoms have the same basic structure. Democritus called these particles atoms Three smaller particles: o Proton: a positively charged in atom s nucleus o Neutron: a neutral(no charge) particle which has about the same needs as a proton and is also in the nucleus. o Electron: a negatively charged particle found outside the nucleus - They are much, much smaller than proton and neutrons. Elements It is a substance (for example: carbon, hydrogen and iron) that consists of identical atoms 118 elements are known ; 98 occur in nature Other elements are named for geographic locations A substance composed of a single atom The element of an atom is depends on the number of protons in the atom s nucleus 25 different elements are found in organism Atoms of different elements can link or bond together to form compounds. Compounds Is a pure substance made up of two or more elements in a fixed ratio by mass. The properties of compounds are different from those of a mixture of its constituent elements. It is characterized by its formula The formula gives us the ratio s of the compound s constituent elements and identifies each element by its atomic symbol Atoms from compounds in two ways: o Ionic Bond: consists of ions and forms through the electrical force between oppositely charged ions.
