CCEV360-04 February 26, 2008 Dillon Gauthier Supplemental Home Problems – Admixtures ADMIX.1 The air entraining agent is responsible for stabilizing the bubbles already present during mixing. The AEA lowers the surface tension of the bubbles, resulting in a more stable bubble. The stirring and kneading action from mechanical mixer disperses the bubbles uniformly. ADMIX.2 Size Range:10-1000µm Mode Size: 10-100µm Non-AEA Voids: >1000µm ADMIX.3 Entrained air voids act as empty chambers for fowing water to enter, thus relieving the osmotic pressure. ADMIX.4 The w/c ratio be lowered because the extra air adds to the workability, and actually lowers the overall compressive strength of the concrete. The less water there is to take up space, the more cement there will be, and the stronger the concrete will be. ADMIX.5 More AEA is needed for a higher cement content. The more fine the gradation, the more dense the mix will be, resulting in less room for the AEA. ADMIX.6
