Parker Cossaboom Gehr ENGL 102 2/2/06 Dick Hickock: Real Deal? The book In Cold Blood is about the murder of a Midwestern family and the manhunt for their killers that ensues. The two killers, Dick Hickock and Perry Smith, are two polar opposites. Perry is like a very young child who seems almost too sweet and innocent to have committed this crime whereas Dick is almost pure evil or at least it seems this way. We think we get a good handle on who Dick is at the beginning of the book, but towards the end we change our opinion. Dick almost seems to be the foil to Perry’s conscience, the little devil that sits on his shoulder arguing with the angel. When we first get a picture of Dick it is through Perry’s eyes. The duo is riding in Dick’s car and Perry is asking Dick about the plan. “…and a hunting vest fully packed with shells contributed further atmosphere to this curios still life. ‘You wearing that?’ Perry asked, indicating the vest.
