Inhibits the growth of bacteria Provide prophylaxis against ophthalmia neonatorum.. Therapeutic Use Applied to prevent ophthalmia neonatorum in newborns of mothers who are infected with gonorrhea and chlamydia. Complications Medication Administration chemical conjunctivitis that lasts 24-48 hr (mild stinging, itching, redness, irritation) temporarily blurred vision hypersensitivity apply 1-2cm ribbon of ointment to the lower conjunctival sac of each eye (one time only in newborns); can also be used in drop form. o not let tip of applicator touch eyelid; place oint. in pocket of eyelid; perform hand hygiene prior to/ after application; remove excess ointment after application. Contraindications/Precautions For ophthalmic use only; do not touch tip of applicator or let tip of applicator touch eye. Interactions Nursing Interventions Administer within 1-2 hrs. of birth. Wear gloves. Cleanse each eye before administration. Administration is required by law in U.S. May increase the concentration of Vitamin K antagonists (warfarin). Client Education Evaluation of Medication Effectiveness Prevention of eye infection in neonates eyes. No signs/symptoms of infection in eyes present. ACTIVE LEARNING TEMPLATES Medication can be delayed until the first breast feeding. Once med has been instilled for one minute excess can be wiped off. Infant’s vision will be blurry.
