The annual cost of asthma care is $15 billion which most are from hospitalizations and emergency visits for asthma exacerbations. Eight percent of these costs come from a minimal 20 percent of the asthmatic population. In this article, testing for difficult to control asthma is discussed. Because most adults with difficult to control asthma are misdiagnosed, a test of the nitric oxide in an asthmatics exhale has been developed. Exhaled NO is increased in severe asthmatic patients, but has no correlation to other possible diagnosis’s, eliminating misdiagnosis of difficult-to-control asthma. This test can help diagnosis a lot because for example asthma is commonly diagnosed as COPD in patients over 40 years of age, and smoking occurs in 30% of asthma patients, and it is a common for patients 40 years or older to have an overlap syndrome.
