Week 1This week began with reading the class announcements, then reviewing the course material andGCU requirements. I contacted my preceptor to schedule a conference time and sent her themandatory documents. We also possible discussed topics for my projects the county’s healthneeds. I knew the county’s ranking was low, I just didn’t realize how low (96thout of 100) andthe obesity rate ranks higher than the state and national rankings. Although, chronic diseases rankhigh as well, I think addressing the obesity epidemic will simultaneously decrease the chronicdisease and mortality rates.Emily stated that our public health department does not have policy for diabetes, I think that iswhere I will start, research to write policy. I hope to get the stakeholders involved and partnerwith agencies such as parks and rec, the senior centers, and departments of county government. Ihave already talked with a few people in the general public (the grocery store and gas station) ontheir thoughts about their health and the responses were not what I expected. I expected moreinterest, and a few were, but the majority think that a pill fixes it all. I am excited to get startedand overwhelmed at the same time! I’m not exactly sure how to accomplish this yet, and I myexpectations may be too high, but through research I really hope to accomplish some culturechange in how the people think about their health. Because, the public health of this county is inREAL need of attention. After the preconference with my professor and preceptor, I started researching articles addressingobesity, programs that are already in place, and looking at other counties to see how theyimplement policy and if they have been successful since the implementation. I’m scheduled to goto the health department next week to research what they have implemented so and where I needto start. This is going to take a lot of work in a little bit of time.Week 2My week began at the health department. Upon arrival, Emily took me on a tour of the healthdepartment, describing each department in detail and their purpose. Years ago, I rememberoperating like a “all in one” health facility. I was disappointed to see that many programs onceoffered had been dissolved due to budget cuts and lack of funding sources. After the tour, I wentto administration to research policy. The administrative assistant, Yvonne, explained that all thepolicies were in books and directed me to a room filled with binders. She stated the most currentpolicies were computer accessible, but even those were printed and placed in books. Only thepast 10 years were in binders, the later than that had been stored, but current policies would alsohave the revisions attached. As I began reading through policies, I found that there were a fewnew policies, like Covid, but most were either effective in 2002 or revised in 2002. I also noticedthat many of the revised policies, only the dates changed but the wording had not. For instance,
