Industrial Warfare Austrian Empire-Czech, Slovakia, Hungary, part of the Balkans, parts of Poland and N Italy Russia covered herself in glory after the Napoleonic defeat in the 19 th century Industrial Revolution starts in late 18 th century in England Steam, power and electricity Railroads started appearing in the 1830’s and became revolutionary and great distances became a thing of the past 1861-1865 American Civil War, railroads are used to transport armies and Europe sent observers to study American tactics during the war The key to railroads was a sequential time table Crimean War 1854-1856 France, Britain, N. Italy vs. Russia—formation and tactics are still similar to Napoleonic era War of Italian Unification 1859-1860 Sardinia unites Italy against Austrain opposition Austro-Prussian War of 18660—Prussia drove Austria out and united Germany Franco-Prussian War of 1870—Germany humiliated France… defeated at Sedan, Alscase- Lorraine is taken from France, indemnity, and humiliation Prussia should not have won either war but… -it invested in railroads -Austria outnumbered 2-1 in population and 4-3 in military Boer War 1899-1902—rebellion in S Africa against English Russo-Japanese War of 1905—along with Boer war was a showcase for the power of new weapons Rifles Percussion cap in 1830’s replaces the flintlock -increases range and accuracy Muzzle loading rifles are very tight fits and take a long time to laod 1849 Minie invented new ball that has a skirt that expands when fired is is conically shaped, so it can fit tightly into the barrel when fired Prussian invents breech loading rifle known as the Needle gun -helped beat Austrians in 1866 Needle gun invented by von Dreyse, adopted in 1848 -uses firing pin to ignite charge -bolt action rifle -200 yard range -50% accuracy -5-7 rpm -bad blowback, limited range
