This is just a reminder that the first HW blog post is due on Monday by 12:30pm. The main focus will be on Herbert Marcuse's "Note on Dialectic" around the questions: What does Marcuse mean by "negative thinking" and "subjectivity"? Also, at least briefly discuss what Adorno and Horkheimer mean by "the culture industry?" We will continue our discussion of Adorno and Horkheimer's "The Culture Industry" but also read the first 4 pages of Walter Benjamin's "The Work of Art in the Age of it's Technological Reproducibility" which we will continue through out next week. In Marcuse’s “Note on Dialectic”, what he means by negative thinking is the simple idea of an individual having independent thoughts and that one cannot think in isolation with others. Knowing that dialectics is an active process of transformation with fundamental roots from the past, why can’t thinking be seen this way as well? To Marcuse, the power of critical thinking or the constant thinking of new ideas, basically reevaluating concepts in general, is seen as a total negation to society. He believes
