Colorful Dreams of Societal Freedom Within Chekhov’s short stories lies an undertone of being asleep to one’s life that is coupled with colorless images to portray a spiritual depiction of life’s blandness and how we try to blind ourselves to reality. In Agafya and Misfortune , Chekhov illustrates scenes that glorify nature, yet refuses to color these in as he makes a statement about the seemingly one dimensional manner in which society proceeds. Throughout these stories as well exists the reoccurring theme of the unconscious flow of life and how the characters cease to seize possibility. In creating these physical manifestations of society’s failures, Chekhov ultimately comes to show us that the active pursuit of a noble objective can add hue and awareness to our lives. In Misfortune , Mrs. Lubyantsev wrestles emotionally with her societal circumstances and in the end decides to awaken from her constrained lifestyle and leave her husband. As the story beings, Ilyin pronounces his love for Mrs. Lubyantsev but does so painfully and with a sense of moral awareness yet primary disregard. Ilyin says, “I
