1/9/08 Organizational Behavior Notes What is an Organization o A consciously coordinated social unit, composed of two or more people, that functions on a relatively continuous basis to achieve a common goal or set of goals o A group of people with a purpose Key parts of the Definition o Consciously coordinated Intentionally harmonized Purposefully working together Organizations don’t just happen o Social Unit People performing specific functions with each other and for other people People, not buildings or bank accounts, make organizations o Relatively Continuous Basis Ongoing Organizations are assumed to be projecting into the future unless extenuating circumstances happen o Achieve A Common Goal Or Set Of Goals The larger goals are generally agreed-upon even if some members have seemingly unrelated sub-goals What is an Organization? o A system of elements, each one affecting, and affected by, the others.
