NURSE BURNOUT AND SAFE QUALITY PATIENT CARE 2 Nurse Burnout and Safe Quality Patient Care The combination of factors such as excessive workload, lack of supportive work environment and nursing care left undone can lead to nurse burnout. Nurse burnout is characterized by emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion which leads to reduction of work efficacy (Mudallal, 2017). This is a worldwide issue that has been reported in all health care settings. The incidences of nurse burnout are as high as 70% in the United States of America (Lyndon, 2016). However, there are other cases that have not been reported. Nurse burnout directly influence patient care and safety; therefore, nurse leaders have to implement programs and policies to prevent nurse burnout. Clinics and hospitals have reported the highest rate of nurse burnout. It also has been reported that health care organizations that serve a large number of patients per day dominate in the incidence of nurse burnout (Bogaert, 2017). The health organizations that serve many patients have heavy workloads, high nurse-patient ratios thus leading to the high number of nurse burnout (Liu, 2018). Where the heavy workload can be described by increased patient’s turnover, chronic conditions and acuity and in turn higher and complex care demands.
