NURSE BURNOUT AND SAFE QUALITY PATIENT CARE2Nurse Burnout and Safe Quality Patient CareThe combination of factors such as excessive workload, lack of supportive workenvironment and nursing care left undone can lead to nurse burnout. Nurse burnout ischaracterized by emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion which leads to reduction of workefficacy (Mudallal, 2017). This is a worldwide issue that has been reported in all health caresettings. The incidences of nurse burnout are as high as 70% in the United States of America(Lyndon, 2016). However, there are other cases that have not been reported. Nurse burnoutdirectly influence patient care and safety; therefore, nurse leaders have to implement programsand policies to prevent nurse burnout. Clinics and hospitals have reported the highest rate of nurse burnout. It also has beenreported that health care organizations that serve a large number of patients per day dominate inthe incidence of nurse burnout (Bogaert, 2017). The health organizations that serve manypatients have heavy workloads, high nurse-patient ratios thus leading to the high number of nurseburnout (Liu, 2018). Where the heavy workload can be described by increased patient’s turnover, chronic conditions and acuity and in turn higher and complex care demands.
