Plot – Exposition: We get the description of pretty much everyone in the household.
find out about Mrs. Freeman, Mrs. Hopewell, Joy (Hulga), Glynese, and Caramae.
Exposition continues as we get a glimpse at each characters beliefs, personality, and way
of talking.Rising Action: The rising action starts when we find out Joy changed her name
This offers our first bit of conflict with the story- the inconsistency of Hulga
It continues as we learn about how everyone views Hulga, and how Hulga
Wwe find out Hulga has only one leg, she is philosopher, a Ph.D.
then get into the story with the Bible salesman.
He comes in, tries to sell them Bibles,
eventually ends up eating dinner with them, to the characters, he seems so “genuine”, he
leaves, but talks to Hulga first and arranges a meaning between them for the first day.
They meet, they take a walk in the woods, they kiss, they go to a barn, go into a loft, kiss
some more, the salesman makes Hulga say that she loves him, he tells her to prove it by
showing him how to take of her leg.
He takes off her leg, then takes out whiskey, cards,
and I think Birth Control (forgive my naivete).
Turning Point: I believe the turning point
occurs when the Bible salesman tells her that he does not believe in God, and he takes her
