Paul Burkhart The Third and Final Continent by Jhumpa Lahiri Plot – Exposition: This lasts not very long, as we see it last from the beginning to about one page later, when the narrator receives his job at MIT. IN that short time we find out several things: Our narrator is India and he lived in London for a while with other bachelors, but eventually had marriage arranged for him by his parents to an ugly woman. “Around the same time” the narrator receives a job at the library of MIT. Rising Action: The narrator arrives in America and has tried to pre-acquaint himself with the country. He starts by staying at the YMCA in a very shabby, small room. He dislikes it there greatly, but tolerates it for a while. He then finds a room to stay in with an old woman fro $8 a week. The narrator and this old woman have a strange routine that is arried on for many weeks. We meet the old woman’s daughter, Helen. We learn the old woman’s age. Then, the narrator moves out and gets a place of his own just in time for his wife to
