Keri Suggs Chapter 2 Study Focus Group 14 1) What is the relation between the spotlight effect and an illusion of transparency? The spotlight effect is the idea that we, the individual, are the center of attention and causes us to overestimate the amount of attention that others aim at us. The illusion of transparency is the idea that concealed emotions can be seen and read by others. The relationship between the two is that by being under the influence of the spotlight effect, we tend to also suffer from an illusion of transparency because we believe that our “audience” is more focused and observant of our actions and emotions than they really are. 2) How do your self-schemas influence the way you perceive and evaluate others? Since self-schemas are specific beliefs by which we define ourselves they also they then are also elements of our self-concept. This then means that our self- schemas are what we use to evaluate others because these schemas are essentially apart of who we are and thus are the things that we tend to notice, remember and perceive about others. 3) Specify what individualism and collectivism are and briefly explain each.
