Determination of the Composition of Unknown Mixtures of Metal Cations George Cheng Chem 203-BB5 Waseem Ahmad 13 October, 2011 Abstract: We used the technique and information we learned from experiment 3 and 4 to solve for the composition of the given unknown cation solution. Introduction: In order to find out what cations I had in the unknown solution 11, I used the technique I learned from experiment 3 and 4. Looking at the solution by itself I could tell that Cu 2+ was one of the cations, due to the blue hue of the solution. I filled the first row with 2-3 drops of the solution 11.Then proceeded with the addition of 2-3 drops of the anions. Once those reactions were completed, I did a few separate reactions with specific cations and anions just to double check my reaction chart from experiment 3 and 4. Results: When I was given my unknown solution, I observed that the solution was clear blue. The clear blue solution indicates that Cu 2+ is one of the cations in the solution. We were only given a limited amount of solution. So carefully with a pipette I put 2-3 drops of the unknown solution into the first row of well-plate. Then I proceeded to put 2-3 drops of the anions into the first row of wells to start the reactions. Once the reactions completed, I took down the observation in my lab notebook.

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
