Running head: CRITICAL APPRASIAL SUMMARY OF STUDIES Patient safety is considered to be one of the most health issues across the world and has been defined as the absence of preventable harm to a patient and reduction of risk of unnecessary harm associated with healthcare to an acceptable minimum (WHO 2017). It has an impact on both patient outcomes and the healthcare system itself, it is deemed to be one of the credible measures of a hospital’s performance and is and is an important factor in ensuring the delivery of high- quality health care. Al ma’mari et al. (2020), conducted a study to explore whether fatigue, workload, burnout and work environment can predict the perception of patient safety among critical care nurses in Oman. In the their literature review, Al ma’mari et al. (2020), noted that nurses working in critical care ought to be fully alert to ensure delivery of safe patient care, they also identified from the literature review factors that can have negative effects on patient safety which include fatigue for example nurses who are fatigued are vulnerable to making errors in clinical judgement and medication administration, factors that have been linked to adverse patient outcome. Significance to nursing. Both articles are significant to nursing in the sense that both articles studied the relationship of patient safety, quality of care with factors influencing it such as work hours, fatigue, workload among nurses. According to Hayashi et al. (2020) the institute of medicine advocated establishment of a system that promotes a patient safety and advised that medical institutions should develop safety culture to prevent adverse errors, they further stated that long working hours of nurses may deteriorate their patient safety culture, and two studies in china, and a study in Korea have also reported same result. 2
