Running Head: Critical Questions Paper #1: Goodness in Shakespeare, Measure for Measure Gilbert Garza WLD-181A Goodness, Truth, and Beauty Summer 2020 Dr. Gayne Anacker Introduction William Shakespeare exact date of birth is unknown, but there is a church record of his baptism on April 26, 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon, United Kingdom. He died in his hometown on April 25, 1616 (Shakespeare et al. vii). His education was Latin-based with a concentration in ancient Latin literature and history. In 1592, at the age of 28, William left his family in Stratford-upon-Avon and moved to London, England. The move turned out to be successful as he established himself as an actor, playwright, and a poet. Shakespeare’s work consists of 39 plays within the genres of comedy, history, and tragedy. He is widely regarded as the greatest writer of the English language. More than four centuries after his death, Shakespeare’s plays are still frequently produced all over the world (Anacker, Lecture Notes, Wm. Shakespeare, MfM). There are many instances where the power of sex within Shakespeare’s play, “ Measure for Measure, ” have a negative and a positive correlation to goodness according to a biblical worldview in both the lives of individuals and society as a whole. In order to have a better understanding of this it would be best to have some insight on the historical context of England at the time, the plot and some basic knowledge of the characters within the play. Historical Context of the Play The play Measure for Measure was printed in the first collection of William Shakespeare’s plays in 1623. The play itself was believed to have been written in 1604. That same year a play named Measure for Measure was performed in front of King James I of England in late December of that year (Shakespeare et al. lxiii). It was only fitting that Shakespeare write a play that could connect with the heart of the new king. That play for Shakespeare to the king was Measure for Measure .” There is a religious dimension to the play that appealed to King James (Anacker, Class Lecture, May 26, 2020). The setting of the play was located in Vienna, Austria; taking place during the current time in history when the play was written (Anacker, Lecture Notes, Wm. Shakespeare, MfM). The Plot and Characters Shakespeare’s, “ Measure for Measure ” is centered around Lord Angelo, who is left in charge of the city of Vienna by the Duke. The measure that Lord Angelo uses to judged others will be used to judge him. Throughout the play there are religious dimensions, one of those dimensions is found in the title, “Measure for Measure.” The source of the title comes from the Bible and can be found in a few passages, one of those passages being Luke 6:37-38 ESV
