The case of torture 1. Levin’s thesis consists of several sentences, but all are needed to constitute a thesis. The thesis reads, “I believe this attitude is unwise. There are situations in which torture is not merely permissible but morally mandatory. Moreover, these situations are moving from the realm of imagination to fact.” 2. Levin expects the reader to answer by saying that it would be impossible to sleep knowing that millions died because you couldn't bring yourself to apply the electrodes, advancing Levin’s argument. 3. Levin’s case of torture is different than torture as punishment in a way that Levin’s torture is only to prevent “future evils.” Levin does not just want to torture people foe whatever reason or to punish them, instead, he wants to prevent future deaths and disasters. 4. Levin uses the possible early assassination of Hitler as an analogy for assassination and preemptive attacks. This analogy is persuasive because the United States had the chance
