1 Gomez Nilsen Gomez Heather Needham COMM 301 5 December 2010 Outline Chapter 6: Analyzing the Audience I. Adapt to Audience Psychology: Who Are Your Listeners? A. Appeal to Listeners’ Attitudes, Beliefs, and Values 1. The key idea to obtaining your audience’s attention is to incorporate their beliefs and values into your speech, making it relevant and motivating to them. B. Gauge Listeners’ Feelings towards the Topic 1. As the speaker, try to know what level of knowledge your audience has towards your topic, their level of interest and their opinion. 2. If they have no knowledge , show them how and why the topic is important to them by relating it to either family issues or positive ideas they believe in. 3. If your audience knowledge towards your topic is little , explain the basics of the topic and make sure to include background information. Also, make sure to identify unknown terms and constantly repeat important terms by summarizing often.
