1 Gomez Nilsen Gomez Heather Needham COMM 301 14 November 2010 Examination 1 1. Communication apprehension is the fear that a person has towards communicating with another person. With this fear, there are physical symptoms of nervousness that a person struggles with: sweating, red/pale, and butterflies in stomach. 2. Four strategies for overcoming speech anxiety during a speech are getting enough rest the night before, drink a warm beverage, and make sure all presentational materials are ready. 3. The three strategies that I would recommend a friend for overcoming anxiety before a speech would be to ask clarifying questions, prepare well in advance and practice as much possible before presenting. 4. The four important ethics that a speaker must follow in public speaking are to know the subject very well, demonstrate tolerance to culture diversity, show honesty and show genuine interest in the well being if the listeners. 5. A speaker should always try to uncover the audience’s feelings and beliefs in order to present a successful speech; for instance, the attitudes, beliefs and values of the audience need to be taken into consideration. The attitude is the evaluations of people’s ideas, objects or events. The beliefs are people feelings towards what they consider is true to them. And values are shaped by both attitudes and beliefs because values are the judgments on the good and bad things in life. 6. It is important to conduct audience analysis because as a speaker I need to gather and analyze as much information possible in order to write a speech that will be meaningful to my audience. 7. Audience demographics are the statistical characteristics of a population; six characteristics of audience demographics are age, ethnic or cultural background, socioeconomic status, religion, political affiliation and gender.
