J A P N 1 0 1 1INTRODUCTION to JAPANESE STUDIES Semester 2, 2018–19 Department of Japanese Studies School of Modern Languages and Cultures The University of Hong Kong This course is designed as an introduction to the Department of Japanese Studies and the different areas of expertise among its faculty. It is a prerequisite for the Major in Japanese Studies and the Minor in Japanese Culture. The goal is to introduce students to key topics and methodologies in the field of Japanese Studies. The course comprises three modules: 1. Premodern and Early Modern Literature, 2. History, and 3. Modern Literature and Film. Students will not only learn about Japan, but also learn how to analyze it critically. By the end of the course, students should have a broad understanding of Japan and the different approaches and questions posed by some of the diverse disciplines that make up Japanese Studies.
