Survey of the Plant Kingdom Exercise 28: Liverworts, Mosses, and Hornworts Understand the generalized life cycle of plants and the concept of alternation of generations. See fig. 28.1. Know the dominant generation (and its ploidy number) of bryophyte plants, and be able to identify them. Liverworts: Know the significance of gemmae cups and be able to identify them. Mosses: -Be able to distinguish between a gametophyte and sporophyte. See fig. 28.8. -Be able to distinguish between a gametophyte and sporophyte longitudinal section on a prepared slide. See fig. 28.10. Exercise 29: Seedless Vascular Plants Know what phyla—and what respective plants—account for seedless vascular plants. Be able to identify them. You should make it a point to know both common and scientific names. Know the dominant generation (and its ploidy number). True Ferns: -Know the significance of sori and be able to identify them. See fig. 29.2. -Be able to identify a fern gametophyte (prothallium) on a prepared slide.
