Janet Ngan Professor Pawlak MUS 231 Jazz History 01 October 2020 Keeping Time Essay #2 When people think jazz music the first few things that usually come to mind are black musicians and improvisation. Since as early as jazz has been around the black community has made an impact by bringing their own little spice to jazz. With jazz there has been so much history and development, from minstrelsy to ragtime. Jazz has evolved through various musicians and their style overtime. Rudolf Fisher, after returning to Harlem after five years from studying medicine discovered the major changes that had occurred, Accordingly, “The best of Harlem's cabarets have changed their names and turned white” (Keeping Time 61). The cabaret was filled with more white people than there were black people. Overtime, cabarets were influenced by the white audience. Since the white and black people had different histories it effects the feeling of the music. The heart of the song comes from the musician singing from their soul and there
