Ngan 1 Janet Ngan Professor Pawlak Mus 231 Jazz History Sec 2 10 September 2010 Keeping Time Essay #1 James Reese Europe and Jelly Roll Morton were two highly influential individuals to the origins of Jazz music. Their contributions to jazz led great impact during the late 1800's to mid 1900's. Both possess different views and interpretations on Jazz. Even though they differ in certain points such as the location in which they pursued their music, there are similarities that the two musicians faced as well. First, James Reese Europe was an important component to the history of Jazz. He was famous for his band with other black musicians called the “Clef Club” which became the first black group to make recordings. Europe believed that, “Jass is, of course, negro, somehow or other all musical originality in America seems to be negro” (Europe 12). Jazz in Europe's perspective arose from the Negros as they creatively manipulate the sound and rhythm. In addition, black musicians play the music as it is written and adds their own accent to the notes (Europe 13). Hence, during this time period
