COMMUNITY ANALYSIS PAPER 2Community Analysis PaperThroughout history, community mental health centers have continually acted asthe beacon of hope for individuals and families battling various psychological, emotional,developmental, and spiritual needs. Up until the Community Mental Health Act of 1963,community mental health centers did not exist for individuals battling serious mental healthillnesses. Individuals had no real alternatives other than state mental hospitals to treat theirmental illnesses. The Community Mental Health Act of 1963 led to the establishment ofcomprehensive community mental health centers throughout the United States. It helped peoplewith mental illnesses who were institutionalized in hospitals and asylums move back into theircommunities. As a result of the Community Mental Health Act of 1963, community mentalhealth centers have started to gain establishment as a more efficient, beneficial, and cost-effective alternative to state mental hospitals (Community Mental Health Act). Today,community health centers have proven to deliver clinical mental health counseling services toindividuals and their families in order to redefine, coordinate, and integrate care. Specifically, inMemphis, Tennessee community mental health centers have risen in addressing various family,developmental, addiction, and mental health needs. This paper serves to analyze the principles,trends, delivery modalities, and continuum of care for community mental health centers andagencies in Memphis, Tennessee. This paper will also examine a community counseling modeland identify areas of strength and recommendation for improvement.To start, in analysis of the community mental health centers in Memphis, Tennessee itwas discovered that several principles seemed evident throughout various agencies andcommunity mental health centers. These principles consisted of family togetherness and faith-based values. Family togetherness serves as the strongest principle in community mental health

Throughout various local agencies the concept of counseling not only forthe individual but to the family seemed prevalent in promoting family togetherness. For example,Bradford Health Services offers various programs for those battling chemical dependency.Among the services offered is family support services, young adult rehab programs, adult andadolescent detox and rehabilitation. Analysis of the Bradford Health Services showed that allaspects of families battling chemical dependency are represented. This principle of familytogetherness can also be seen the mission for Braford Health Services. Their mission is that theyare, “… bringing new hope to patients and their families” and providing “… treatment that canwork for everyone involved.” Family togetherness is not only seen in chemically dependent
