Discuss any ‘new’ information you discovered while learning about the fatigue or corrosion of metals used in aircraft construction. Pick three or four of these items and explain your thoughts on how this topic applies to aviation safety. Siddiqui (2015) defines corrosion as the deterioration and degradation of the mechanical properties of a material interacting with the environment. The main reason as to why metals corrode is because we utilize them in environments where they are chemically unstable (be it deserts, coastal areas… etc). There are two types of corrosion, and they are Direct chemical corrosion and Electrochemical corrosion. Direct chemical corrosion is as simple like the term, where the corrosion is eminent attack from a direct exposure of a bare surface to caustic liquid or gaseous agents (Siddiqui, 2015). One good example of direct chemical corrosion is Atlantic Southeast Flight 529, there the taper bore was corroded by the chlorine cock which was used to retain the lead wool (FAA, n.d.).
