Theme "They had before them the basest of crimes, a crime made worse than sordid by the fact that they were dealing with a monster, a man without morals." The novel “The Stranger” by Albert Camus could possibly have multiple themes. I believe a major theme is to think before you act. This quote represents the theme as a whole because it’s explaining that Mersault ended up in jail for acting on something before he thought it through. We see this pattern a lot from Mersault throughout the novel. Because of his actions, society viewed him as a monster. Characterization "It occurred to me that anyway one more Sunday was over that Maman was buried now, that I was going back to work, and that, really, nothing had changed." - Meursault This quote characterizes Mersault as a whole. Throughout the story, his main struggle that led to all of his conflicts was his lack of emotion. He viewed the world in such an abnormal way. This quote is referring to when his mother died. He felt nothing towards it at all and went back to his life as normal. He
