“Angels in America: Millennium Approaches” Response Paper A thematic issue present in the play “Angels in America: Millennium Approaches” is the discovery and connotation of sexuality. This play circles the lives of four men who are embarrassed by their sexuality and/or confused with it. Louis leaves his partner Prior when he contracts AIDS, Joe cheats on his wife with Louis, and Roy is a closeted homosexual who dies of AIDS. I have experienced this issue first hand, which is something I can’t usually say. I grew up believing I was straight, because I just thought most everyone was. When I was a freshman in high school I finally realized I was bisexual. This didn’t really faze me or change anything about me, it was just a new secret I could keep. I’ve told my close friends, but that’s about it, and now you. It’s not something I am ashamed of, it’s just that the people in my life, such as my relatives or everyone in my small hometown, aren’t too accepting of homosexuality. I don’t want to face that backlash. And I'm sure many others feel this way too. It’s not uncommon to see cyberbullying online targeted towards the people in the LGBTQ community. Whether you’re in a Call of Duty lobby, or scrolling through TikTok or Instagram, you’re bound to see or hear negative words and derogatory terms aimed at this community. In America, and many other countries, there is widespread homophobia. There are still hundreds of millions of Americans who disagree with same-sex marriage. While LGBTQ rights and awareness have grown in recent years, the fight still persists for equality and acceptance.
