The Elephant Vanishes I'm fond of the story "The Elephant Vanishes", which describes the mysterious disappearance of a feeble giant old elephant and its keeper. Simultaneously, the story theme is about the imbalance in the real world (Tokyo Suburb society in the 1980s), and the difference between reality and appearances of the events. The story includes sequences of actions and circumstances, which implicates a lot of insightful meaning. However, I would like to discuss here my most concerning problem in this story - the imbalance. A nameless narrator starts the story by talking about an extraordinary incident that draws the attention of all townspeople at that time; the town symbol - an old elephant - has vanished into thin air. From the beginning, the narrator admits his unusual curiosity in the elephant problem, which can give him the ability to recall every event leading up to the case of missing. He recalls how the elephant becomes a part of the town, how the situation happened between the mayor, the developer, and the zoo owner, and how the authorities are unable to find any clue of the elephant whereabouts. There is a noticeable point that the elephant lives in a big city, among the townspeople; its protagonist is apparently an example of something unusual among usual things- the inequality. The
