Rebecca Griffith IBECHS American History Name Pam Morales Date 10/14 Block 2 Slave Narratives – SHEG Activity How does the account portray slavery? (Be sure to cite specific information from the interview.) How does the account compare to the other two documents? Document A The words spoken by William Colbet are reflected in Document A, which demonstrates the harsh treatment of slaves in this document. William Colbet states, “No sir, he wasn’t good to none of us…hated to be bought by him because he was so mean.” “Now…I’m going to teach you some sense’ with that he started laying on the lashes.” Both of these lines represent the awful treatments induced onto the slaves. This document refers to the harsh treatments carried out on the slaves by William's Master. Whereas document B applies to the incites performed by the master and misses. Document B This document by Tempie Herndon Durham, explains the treatment they faced under a master and a misses. “Maybe everybody’s Master and Misses weren’t as good as Master George and Miss Betsy, but they were the same as mammy and pappy to us.” “If he was sick, Master and Misses looked after him, and if he need more store medicine, it was bought and given to him; he didn’t have to pay nothing.” These lines suggest that under her master, slaves were better handled than other slaves were.
