Lindsay 1 Ciera Lindsay McCoy, English 102 4/30/12 Life of Pi Essay Determination Pi Patel is a young boy with much love for his religion and his family. His family owns a zoo in India and when given the chance they sell the zoo to leave on a boat for Canada. Pi is a curious boy who wonders about the world and the mysteries of life. His character’s story in the book is filled with many struggles for him as a child. He had to overcome a lot of battles through his journey in the book, such as, his religious beliefs, his time oversea, his family, etc. Yet, with his determination to succeed in everything he did he accomplished a lot of his set backs. Pi had determination to survive through his time at sea, he had determination to have people be open minded, and he had determination for religion. He used this persistence to help him strive for a better and happy life. For half of the book Pi is stranded on a lifeboat in the middle of the Pacific Ocean with vicious animals that could kill him at any time. Once most of the animals ate each other, the only animal left is the tiger named, Richard Parker. His determination to tame the tiger and feed him, so the tiger does not eat Pi, keeps him alive “In my case, to protect myself from Richard Parker while I trained him, I made a shield with a turtle shell,” (Pg. 205). This determination to keep Richard Parker alive was good for Pi, it gave Pi something to do while at sea. Taking care of
