Choose one of the more detailed frames to examine thoroughly. Remark
on the characters, what they are wearing, the setting, and any action
being depicted. Then, dig deeper into the picture. Notice the use of
shadowing, strange artistic details, and facial expressions. How are those
affecting the frame? What do you think Satrapi is trying to say?
Marjane's mom is wearing a big coat to hide her face and sunglasses. As
we also know, because of previous panels, she has dyed her hair to be less
recognizable. The men watching her all have big beards and dark hair.
Because the background is black the men seem to blend with the
background, at least compared to Marjane's mom. I think Satrapi wants to
show that it's hard to see and know who you can trust. The men's faces
are also way bigger than Marjane's mom, maybe symbolizing that they're
stronger than her. Secondly, the faces appear more square than any other
faces we've seen in the comic so far, there are hard edges and little to no
circular shapes, this makes the men seem hard and though.
