He volunteers to be sent by the king to relieve the people from Grendel terror. Young Beowulf conquers the Grendel and later returns to succeed his king and maintains his people's safety and peace. At an old age, Beowulf goes alone on another mission to save Wiglaf. The poem portrays lessons on life and temporary power. Another exciting feature of the poem is the economy of words used to convey the story. There are three heroic wars in about three thousand words. There are no marathon descriptions of the wars and no extended buildups. The speeches in the poem are brief and yet complete.
