textiles, and metalwared for gold and slaves. After Henry’s death, Bartolomeu Dias rounded the Cape of Good Hope and entered the Indian Ocean in 1488. Although his journey was not successful, the routes he found to India, China and Southeast Asia (spice-bearing island) remained open continuing trade. Portugal’s early advantage did not last however due to the Portugese mariners not following up Dias’ voyage as a result of some domestic and foreign problems.
