1 The detrimental effects of substance abuse to the inhabitants of Pacific island nations Substance abuse refers to the consumption of drugs that are harmful to the human body. These are illicit drugs which currently have widespread detrimental effects to the users as well as innocent victims. It is sad to note that the innocent inhabitants of the wider island communities are exposed to drugs. This essay will unfold into seven paragraphs to discuss the risks imposed by illicit drug and the duties of the task force in eliminating drug use and trafficking. According to Puamau, 2011, Fiji is faced with both illicit drug trafficking and increase use, unfortunately, limited data exist to assist in proving this. Illicit drug trafficking in the country arises out of rural to urban drift. The trafficking put people’s lives at risk. For example, Fiji is considered a transit area. According to Puamau, “drugs such as heroin, methamphetamine and cocaine are not commonly used due to their high cost when compared to the average income”. Recent reported cases of cocaine found in the country was suspected to be an organized crime that had direct link with drugs. In the bid to eliminate drug trafficking, enforcement agencies have worked hand in hand. In the article titled ‘Illicit Drug use in Fiji’, Puamau stressed that the New Zealand Police have reiterated that agencies need to work hand in hand to curb illicit drug trafficking.
