Latin Literature in Translation Midterm Check List, Part 1 The test will consist of 30 multiple choice questions, approximately 6 identifications (out of 8), and 2 short answer essays (out of 3). The multiple choice questions, identifications, and short answer essays will come from material discussed in class through Tuesday of Week 6 as well as study terms and questions pertaining to the introductory essay on Roman culture by P. MacKendrick in the Classics in Translation reader, Plautus, Lucretius, Sallust, and the handout on the Roman gods, the Pliny Ghost story, and the various introductions to each author in the Classics in Translation reader. The short answer essays will be: 1. Discuss the influence of Greek literary genres (history, comedy, philosophy, and oratory) on Latin literature in the Roman Republic. 2. Discuss the role of women in Livy’s History of Early Rome . 3. Know the story line of the The Haunted House . 4. Explain Lucretius’ ideas on the atomic theory.
