Morrison 1Charles MorrisonProfessor ZhangCHN 3076/2/2011Lu Xun’s “Kong Yiji” and view towards ConfucianismChina’s Confucius ideas during the early 20thcentury evoked a lot of writers to attack Confucius practices along with the examination system to induce a revolution for change in traditional ways. China from 1900-1920 went through several phases to change their identity within their government and literature. In the 1905 ban of the examination process, the 1911 Revolution and the May Fourth Movement all expressed problems with the old traditional Chinese practices and policies. Writers such as Lu Xun wrote short stories to express their dislikes based upon for these government practices. Lu Xun in particular thought that the examination process and Confucian ideals needed to change. Lu Xun wrote “Kong Yiji” in 1919 and was very critical on Chinese cultural heritage. The Story of “Kong Yiji” through Lu Xun’s point of view represents the poor structure/ society that China had within the education system, Confucius ideals toward society, and the need of much rapid reform through revolution.Three transformations through the early 20thcentury helped invoke a more intellectual China and stray away from traditional Confucius ways: the 1905 ban, the 1911 Revolution, and the May Fourth Movement. In Wright’s book China in Revolution she states, “the Boxer Rebellion finally forced on China a polar choice: national extinction or wholesale transformation not only of a state but also of a civilization” (1). Morrison 2the first thing on the agenda was to make the people feel like they had a national identity and not follow such a strict Confucius example. This then led to the Hundred Days Reform, which brought the 1905 ban on the imperial examination system. With the ban on the examination system, people had more of a choice than to either become an imperial official or just a peasant. Most people despised the exams because it dictated their lives. If one did not pass this exam than their lives would be to do labor in the fields with the threat of being looked down upon by society. Then the 1911 Revolution (Xinhai Revolution) continued bringing change to Chinese society. During the Qing Dynasty, the government was corrupt and did a terrible job in keeping foreign influences out. The Manchus were in control, but after several years of revolution, the Qing Dynasty was brought down and China’s government became the Republic of China. Even though the 1911 Revolution brought the Qing dynasty out of power, it did not solve most of the Chinese social problems, however, the May Fourth Movement several years later did solve some social problems.
