Lab 7: Determination of Fe by UV-Vis Spectroscopy Dianie Fontenelle Team Members: Gina Whitten and Nelcy Ibarra Group #7 20 April, 2017
Purpose: to use a spectrophotometer to determine the absorption maximum by plotting absorbance against wavelength. Beer’s law can be used to determine molar absorptivity of the unknown sample, by using data to prepare a calibration curve Materials: 1, 10- phenanthroline solution Standard iron (II) stock solution Hydroxylamine solution Sodium acetate solution 12 mL of unknown 100 mL volumetric flask (x7) Pipets Distilled water Stopper Spectrophotometer Procedures: 1. In 5 of the volumetric flasks, pipet 5, 10,15,20, and 25mL of the standard iron (II) stock solution respectively. Use a combination of 5-,10-, and 25-mL volumetric pipets/ 2. Pour 50 mL of distilled water into a 6 th flask to serve as the “blank.” 3. Obtain 12mL unknown sample directed by instructor of TA, place in a 7 th flask and treat it in the same manner as the standards, as indicated below.
