Determination of Fe by UV-Vis Spectroscopy Analyst: Luis Giner Partners: Zane Morgan and Midhinesh Raparthy Group: 10 Date: April 19, 2018 BACKGROUND: The materials used in this lab such as 1,10-phenanthroline solution, standard iron (II) stock solution, Hydroxyl ammonium chloride solution, Sodium acetate solution, Unknown: 12 mL for each group, volumetric flasks, pipet, test tubes, spectrophotometer TEST METHOD AND RESULTS: 1. Pipetted 5 mL, 10 mL, 15 mL, 10 ml, and 25 mL of standard iron (II) to a 100 mL volumetric flask, then filled a 6 th flask with distilled water to make a blank solution. 2. Added 12 mL of unknown to a 7 th flask. 3. Then we added 1 mL of the hydroxylamine solution, 5 mL of the 1,10-phenanthrolin, and 8 mL of the sodium acetate solution to each one of the 7 flasks. 4. We swirled the volumetric flasks and then diluted with distilled water, used stopper and flipped 20 times. (Went a bit over line on volumetric, used 15.05 mL of unknown) 5. Then we waited 15 min for the color to fully develop and measured the absorbance for the wanted 2.5ppm standard solution at the maximum absorption wavelength from 400-
