About Ernest J Gaines Born January 15, 1933 and died November 5, 2019 His work reflects the African American experience and the tradition of his Louisiana childhood His noble work was A lesson Before Dying,The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman,and A Gathering of Old Men His best work was The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman He got awards and honors at National Medal of Arts in 2013 and National Book Critics’ Circle Award in 1994 He graduated from San Francisco State College in 1956 and attended graduate school at Stanford University He taught or was writer-in-residence at several schools such as Denison and Stanford universities
